|buy The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder at Amazon|
An interesting look at a mostly forgotten murder in New York City in 1841. The murder of Mary Rogers caused a sensation when it was reported, and remains unsolved to this day.
Edgar Allan Poe was living and working in New York at the time of the murder, and used the newspaper articles of the time to inform his story "The Murder of Marie Roget."
Stashower follows both Mary and Edgar's stories as they intersect, and shows how Mary's story impacted Edgar's career.
I read this off my To Be Read file for my 3rd 101 Things in 1001 Days. It was an interesting and well-researched story, and I learned more about Poe than I'd known when I started.
I'd recommend it to anyone who has an interest in Poe, murder mysteries, and/or the history of New York.
