Book review: The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister

The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister

The story is the reworking and interpretation of a diary that Nonna kept as a child in Russia, Poland and Germany during the Second World War. Nonna had been taught Russian, German Polish and Yiddish as a child, and was able to trade on her language skills to get easier assignments as the war went on, eventually working in a hospital as a translator. The rest of her family were not so fortunate. Although she didn't speak of her experiences after the war until the end of her life, she kept her diaries and eventually began to translate them and try to fill in the gaps. The result is a choppy but moving recollection of a survivor whose parents prepared her for the worst without even realizing
