The Mary Sue reports on a very rare statue, previously believed to be that of a female athlete, has been redefined by one historian as a Gladiatrix.

Although there's no dispute over the existence of female gladiators, this is only the second visual depiction of one discovered so far. Researcher Alfonso Manas believes that the woman is holding up a short sword as a symbol of victory, and looking downward at a fallen opponent.
