Unfamiliar Fishes

I'm a fan of Sarah Vowell's books, so when I heard that she had a new one coming out, I immediately put it on my wishlist. It was well worth it.

In Unfamiliar Fishes, Vowell takes us on a history of Hawaii from just before Captain Cook's arrival through to the election of the first U.S. President to hail from Hawaii. Shut up, birthers.

Although I didn't really have much interest in the history of Hawaii - and I certainly wasn't as invested in the story as I was for her book "The Wordy Shipmates" - it was a good read. Informative, evocative, witty and touching in turns, Vowell makes history approachable. I want to see the sights she described, especially now that I understand their history better. And that's saying something, since Hawaii had been fairly low on my list of places to visit.

You Are the Empire State Building

You are definitely a city person. You love crowds and excitement... the more the better.

You are flashy and showy. You like to flaunt what you've got.

You are confident and sure of yourself. You believe in yourself and know what you're capable of.

You make rules up as they go along. It's more fun that way.

Me. Want.

You Are Gutsy

You are always down to take a risk. You are a bit of a gambler, at least when it comes to life.

You are prone to fantasy. You can't help but engage in some wishful thinking.

You are easily distracted. There's so much going on in the world, and you think focus is overrated.

You are attracted to strange things. Uniqueness fascinates you.

You Are a Baguette Cut Stone

You don't like to sit around wondering whether you should act! You prefer to get moving.

You believe that big things are going to happen for you in life. You are very optimistic.

Your ideas are outlandish but not as out there as they seem. You are more brilliant than radical.

You're confident about your future. You see the world as your oyster.

You Should Visit the Statue of Liberty

Bold and adventure loving, life is one big party for you. And you celebrate early and often.

Happy and upbeat, you are always optimistic. It's about what you have... not about what you don't.

When times get tough, you get philosophical. You never forget the meaning of life.

You tend to avoid commitments, preferring to keep your life free from responsibilities.
