Treachery in Death
Treachery in Death

J.D. Robb is back with a taught thriller about a dirty cop running the Illegals division. Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke - along with Peabody, McNab and the rest of the crew - work together to solve the murder of a dead junkie, finding it tied into a conspiracy at the very top of the Illegals division. They must tread carefully, working with IAB and the NYPSD brass to make the charges stick.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this one, since it was more intrigue than Robb's usual fare, but I found it to be compelling. It was one of Robb's better efforts in awhile, and while some of the decisions played better for drama than realistic police work, and the climax seemed a little gratuitous, it was overall a good read.

Periodic Table of Storytelling by ComputerSherpa on DeviantArt

Most movie fans have heard of the AFI 100 Years 100 Movies list, first released in 1997, and then updated for the 10th anniversary in 2007.

The challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to watch one movie per week, in order, and post your thoughts in the comments that week. If you've posted a review, link back to that as well. I think it will be fun to discuss out thoughts on each movie. If you've already seen it, you decide for yourself whether to watch it again. If you don't want to watch, or don't finish it, you can write about why.

The first movie is Citizen Kane, and the blog discussion date is Tuesday, April 19.

An Object of Beauty: A Novel

An Object of Beauty tells the story of a woman's life in the art world as she works her way up from the basement of Sotheby's. Lacey is driven, selfish and often cold. Even so, she draws people to her and fascinates them.

I liked the story, and Martin's elegant, intelligent prose kept me coming back for more. He assumes you have an art vocabulary and doesn't dumb down his writing or bother to explain what he expects you to know.

I enjoyed the twist at the end, though I felt the story was unfinished. There was more that I wanted to know.
