Next Tuesday...Gone with the Wind

  1. The quintessential musical. It's everything MGM musicals in the 50's aspired to be, mostly by going back to the 20's.

Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor are perfectly cast, and the film has one of the funniest musical numbers(Make 'em Laugh) and the most iconic (the eponymous Singin' in the Rain).

It's fun and funny. Jean Hagen is hilarious as Lina Lamont. She was robbed of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. My children and I still quote her, "I make more money than Calvin Coolidge. Put together!"

  2. You touched on the very best thing about Singin' in the Rain -- Jean Hagen. I adore her in this movie!

The rest of the movie? Eh. Not that crazy about it. And I don't know why, because I adore Gene Kelly. But I'm just never grabbed by this one, or by American in Paris. (I readily admit the problem is me, not Gene.)

  3. I really have to see more Jean Hagen movies. I know she was in Adam's Rib with Hepburn and Tracy.

I do love Singin' in the Rain, but I agree that An American in Paris wasn't that great. I found it too long and self-indulgent.
