Where I run into trouble

image: The Political Compass
So my son sent me this link to a political compass test. It's supposed to show where you fall between Libertarian and Authoritarian on the social spectrum, and Left and Right on the economic spectrum.

The image above is of my results. I'm slightly to the right of Nelson Mandela on the economic scale, and just a touch more authoritarian than the Dalai Lama on the social scale.

But here's the thing: A lot of these questions are phrased in terms of "always" and "never." I'm the kind of person who avoids infinitives. There's too much gray area for me to say "always" and "never." There were  questions I would have answered differently if they'd been asked differently. And other questions that I would have given no response, but it's impossible to continue the test with unanswered questions.

So there I sit, between Mandela and the Dalai Lama. Respectable company, if you ask me. But I think I'm still further to center than the test shows.

  1. I got roughly the same rating. I agree with you -- I think the test is too general and all that our mutual results show is that we aren't right wing nut jobs (after all, I think I'm more progressive/liberal than this reflects). But it was fun any way, and it got me thinking.
