There has been a lot of criticism of the car chases that happen during the movie, and while I admit there's probably more than necessary, I don't think they really take too much away from the story.
Although John Travolta took some heat for sounding uncomfortable with the profanity in his dialog. When looking at the character after we learn a bit more about him, it starts to make a little sense. All in all, I'd call it a good remake. It's slicker than the original, with more side-plots. It's a little less claustrophobic.
If you have to choose, go with the original, but this is decent enough on its own.
