Richard Burton stars in this epic as a Roman tribune who wins Christ's robe in a dice game at the crucifixion. When he tries to wear the robe, it hurts him, so he gives it away to his slave, who escapes. Convinced that the robe is responsible for his subsequent madness, he tries to track down the slave and destroy the robe.
It's a typical 50's Biblical epic, full of grandiose dialog and unsubtle acting, but it won Oscars for its costume design, art design and set decoration. Burton was nominated for an Oscar for his role as well.
This is one of those great winter Sunday afternoon films, where you just want to watch a big ol' movie and not have to think too hard.
