Book review: Matchless, A Christmas Story, Gregory Maguire

This is a very short story by the author of Wicked (loved the play, hated the book). It tells the story of Frederik, a poor woman's son somewhere in Denmark. His story intersects briefly with that of Hans Andersen's The Little Match Girl. I liked how Maguire kept the feel of Andersen's writing. The tale, while not particularly up-beat, does end on a positive note, in the Andersenian style.

The story is simple, with illustrations that make it very like a fairy tale from the mid 19th century.

Thanks to Nely at All About {n} for the suggestion.
