Book of seasons: Devil's Night

image: Time.com

I was living in the suburbs of Detroit during the Devil's Night heyday of the late '80s, which is a uniquely Detroit phenomenon. There were newscasts in the week leading up to Halloween, always talking about being watchful and the tremendous police presence that would be out on October 30. Comcast gave away free premium cable channels for the three-day "trouble times" of 10/29-10/31.

An article on Time.com talks about Detroit's improvement in recent years, although they also point out that, with the mess that is Detroit's housing market, there's more incentive now than ever to fire a house for insurance money.
