enviro-mental archives: A place to call home
The 190 Bowery Building photo: NY Magazine
Back in 1966 Jay Maisel bought this 1898 bank building for $102,000. He, his wife and their daughter live here, in 72 rooms on six floors. For the most part, they live on the sixth floor, with studio space on the largely-unchanged 4th and 5th floors. They still use the original elevator, in perfect working order.
I love what they've done with the kitchen, which is original to the building. Staff used to prepare meals for the bankers here.
Here, a great use of plywood flooring. I wish I'd thought of something like that in our last home.
The Maisels have received offers to sell, with prices estimated in the 30-million range. What would you do? Go or stay?
