Rhode Island's Independent Spirit

The Independent Man

With Maine's governor signing the gay marriage bill into law, Rhode Island is the only remaining state in New England not to either allow or recognize gay marriage.

Rhode Island has a long-standing history of going its own way and stubborn independence. The statue atop the State House is known as the Independent Man. It was the last state to ratify the constitution, and the first to fire on the British.

There have been opposing bills introduced into the legislature, and the fact that every other state in New England has passed gay marriage measures is no guarantee that Lil Rhody will follow suit.
