Providence Public Library to turn branches over to city

Providence Public Library

The Providence Journal reports that the Providence Public Library (a private non-profit) will transfer control of its nine branches to the city.

This has been in discussion for awhile now, but the city finally agreed to take responsibility for running the branches. If the city hadn't taken over the branches, PPL had said it would have to close them.

PPL will continue to run the main library in downcity Providence.

  1. Actually, the PPL board voted to transition the branches immediately AND ALSO consider the Mayor's offer to take over the entire system, central and all, which is what the staff and public want. The central only plan only got 2 votes.

  2. i was at the meeting--the first comment is absolutely correct and glaringly missing from the press release--
