Movie review: Wuthering Heights
Based on the novel by Emily Bronte, the story follows Cathy and Heathcliffe, a privileged Scottish girl and her foundling step-brother, as they grow up together. Heathcliffe and Cathy are in love, but Cathy is more in love with advancement. Heathcliffe, who has been relegated to stableboy by Cathy's brother, only wants Cathy.
As they reach adulthood, Cathy vacillates between her love for Heathcliffe and the security and privilege that a rich suitor can provide. Heathcliffe, hearing her scorn for his poverty, takes off.
Some time later, the two meet again. Heathcliffe returns a wealthy man, but Cathy is married now to the neighboring estatesman.
Lawrence Olivier brings depth to sullen Heathcliffe, and Merle Oberon makes Cathy an annoying, flighty woman. If there were ever two people who just didn't belong together, it's these two.
