Movie review: How Green Was My Valley

A lovely, sentimental and sometimes sad slice of life in a Welsh coal mining town.

The protagonist, a boy named Huw (say "Hugh," played by Roddy McDowell) grows up among his father and brothers, all coal miners, his indomitable mother and older sister. Through the course of the movie, a brother marries, his sister marries, the miners strike, he goes to public school, scandal rocks his family.

Other tragedies befall, but always at the steady through it are his father and mother, the head and heart of the family.

The story should drag, but it doesn't. The scenery is lush and beautifully shot. It's a lovely rainy afternoon movie.
