Movie review: City Lights

The sweet story of a down and out little man (Charlie Chaplin's little tramp) who befriends a perennially drunk millionaire played with bipolar intensity by Harry Myers.

Our poor hero rescues the millionaire before he throws himself off a bridge, and wins his undying friendship - while he's drunk. Unfortunately, that's only half the time. When the millionaire is sober, he doesn't remember the tramp at all.

All this on-again off-again might be tolerable if the tramp hadn't fallen for a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill). The millionaire's largess allows our hero to court the girl in style. Sometimes.

It's a sweet movie, mostly funny. Even the pathos isn't particularly stressful.
