Movie review: American Beauty
Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is having a mid-life crisis. His shrew of a wife doesn't understand or like him, his daughter (Thora Birch) has attractive girlfriends, a rather creepy boyfriend (Wes Bentley, the most interesting character in the movie) and no respect for her father whatsoever.
Thus Lester decides to rejuvenate his life in the most juvenile way possible. He quits his job, starts work at a fast food restaurant and starts smoking dope and working out so the pretty high school girl will notice him.
If the purpose of this movie is to illustrate how completely pathetic one man's selfish indulgence can be, it succeeds splendidly. I found the whole thing to be utterly annoying.
